When I started learning English, Subject-Verb-Agreement has always been a problem for me. Now, in order to understand Filipino - Voice - Marker Agreement, one has to understand how subject and verbs in English agree.
English Subject Verb Agreement
In English, we use the plural nouns with singular verbs and singular nouns with plural verbs.
The man eats
The apple falls
The bird flies
This is then different when we use has and have.
I, You, We, and They all takes have while He, She, & It take has.
I have an apple
You have an apple
He/She/It has an apple.
We have an apple.
They have an apple.

Objectives
- Be able to understand basic English Subject Pronouns.
- Be able to understand the part that goes into Filipino Sentence Agreements.
- Be able to differ the difference between Actor Focus and Object Focus.
- Be able to use the markers that agrees with the voice/focus and the pronoun.
NOTE:
There’s really no correlation on plurality and singularity between verbs and subject in Filipino. They only must correlation when the focus is either Actor or Object Focus.
So, we will then divide this lesson in two different section: Actor Focus Agreement and Object Focus Agreement

ACTOR FOCUS AGREEMENT
All sentences that focuses on the doer/actor of the sentences must use:
Root Verb: Inom
Verb Affix: UM
Pronoun: Siya
Marker: NG
Object: kape
Siya ay uminom ng kape. OR Uminom siya ng kape.
“He drank coffee”
All sentences that focuses on the doer/actor of the sentences must use:
- Actor type pronouns: Subject/Topic Pronouns
- Actor type verbs: UM, MAG, & NAKA Verbs
- NG Marker.

Verb Affix: UM
Pronoun: Siya
Marker: NG
Object: kape
Siya ay uminom ng kape. OR Uminom siya ng kape.

OBJECT FOCUS AGREEMENT
All sentences that focuses on the object/reciever of the sentences must use:
Root Verb: Inom
Verb Affix: IN
Pronoun: Niya
Marker: Ang
Object: Kape
Ininom niya ang kape OR Ang kape ay ang ininom niya.
NOT: Niya ay ininom ang kape.
“He drank the coffee”
All sentences that focuses on the object/reciever of the sentences must use:
- Object type pronouns: Genitive Pronouns (Possessive Adjectives)
- Object type verbs: IN, NA, NA-AN, and IN-AN
- ANG Marker
Root Verb: Inom
Verb Affix: IN
Pronoun: Niya
Marker: Ang
Object: Kape
Ininom niya ang kape OR Ang kape ay ang ininom niya.
NOT: Niya ay ininom ang kape.
“He drank the coffee”
